If you plan to travel overseas and are concerned about becoming a victim of a forced marriage, keep in mind what risks you may face, and think about how to prevent them: 
     

• You may be alone/cut off from friends
  
• You may be in unfamiliar surroundings
• You may face emotional pressure from your family
• You may be watched all the time
• You may have no money
• You may not have your passport or your ticket home
• You may even not have access to a phone or to the internet

These are some ideas on how you can help yourself avoid these risks:

• If possible take a cell phone with you, and have the contact number of the U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh handy
• Take some of your own money and keep it safe
• Keep your passport or a copy of your passport secure and in your possession
• Leave the following information with a trusted friend, teacher, or responsible adult outside your family:
• the full address and phone number of where you are staying overseas
• your flight detail

For citizens of the United States (including dual nationals) we can provide confidential assistance with issues and problems, such as:

• Intervening/negotiating on your behalf with family members
• Locating a temporary shelter for you
• Helping arrange your travel back to the U.S.
• Providing referrals to legal service organizations or a list of attorneys who have notified the Embassy that they are interested in assisting in these kinds of cases.
• Assisting with medical and health referrals
• Providing loans to US citizens who qualify

Contact the American Embassy in Dhaka, and ask to speak to the American Citizen Services section.  Give us as much specific information as possible to help us find your friend or family member. We will then try to contact them and see if s/he needs our help.
