U.S. Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Michael S. Owen Visits Bangladesh

Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Owen meets with leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia. He is accompanied by Ambassador James F. Moriarty.
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Michael S. Owen visited Bangladesh September 9-10. During his visit, Mr. Owen met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina; the leader of the opposition, Khaleda Zia; and Minister for Food and Disaster Management Abdur Razzak, among others. He also had meetings with representatives from the business community and civil society.
In addition, Mr. Owen visited two key U.S. Government-sponsored programs to hear directly from participants and beneficiaries. He visited one of the 320 Smiling Sun clinics funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, which provide essential family planning, maternal health services, and child health care services. He also visited a USAID-funded HIV/AIDS Health Center in Kuril.
