Demonstration Notice

February 20, 2009

Language Day celebrations will begin the evening of Friday, February 20, and continue on Saturday, February 21, 2009.  Festivities in Dhaka will be centered around Dhaka University.  Crowds at organized celebrations have been routinely targeted in the past for attacks.  Therefore, the U.S. Embassy advises American citizens to avoid Dhaka University and all other areas where Language Day events are taking place.

All Americans are reminded to exercise vigilance when traveling in Dhaka. Avoid crowds, remain alert and aware at all times, and continue to vary routes and schedules.  Finally, please remember to carry mobile phones at all times.

Please monitor the local media for updates. English language local news is available on the following channels at the following times:

ATN – 1800
Bangla Vision – 2105
BTV – 2200
BTV – 2330 (also broadcasts by all local satellite stations: ATN, Channel I, NTV, RTV, Bangla Vision, and Boishaki)
