Security Notice for January 7, 8 and 9, 2007

The Awami League has called for countrywide blockades on January 7-8, 2007 and now decided to call for a blockade January 09, 2007 as well. In addition to the blockades, the Awami League will also lay siege to the Presidential Palace (Bangabhaban) on January 09, 2007.

During the blockade on January 7 so far a few buses have been set on fire. There is a possibility of widespread violent demonstrations across the country. In Dhaka, the demonstrations are likely to occur in 29 locations. The majority of the demonstrations are expected to be in the following areas:

The Muktangon, Press Club, Topkhana Road, Paltan, Bangabandhu Avenue, Gulistan, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque North Gate, Bijoy Nagar, Motijheel, Mohakhali, Mirpur, Gabtoli, Jatrabari, Farm gate, Dhanmondi Russel Square, Shahbag, Dhaka University, Uttara, Tongi, Chawkbazar, Malibagh.

We recommend that American citizens avoid areas where large crowds are gathered, especially those listed above.

We also recommend that American citizens continue to monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.
