Security Notice for January 8, 2007

There are even less vehicles on the roads in Dhaka than yesterday. Bicycle rickshaws are still on the roads in large numbers.

Roads between Dhaka and the rest of the country are still shut down.

Violence between the police and demonstrators occurred yesterday in Shamoly, Dhanmondi Russel Square, Paltan, Muktangon, Mohakhali and Mirpur (Adabor) area.

Some buses were burned and taxi cabs, private cars and CNGs (motorized rickshaws) were attacked. More than a hundred people were injured and arrested.

About 14,000 law enforcement officers are deployed in the city. The military is also deployed in vehicles to assist in enforcing civil order.

We recommend that American citizens continue to monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.
