DEMONSTRATION NOTICE

January 8, 2009

Bangladesh authorities anticipate large demonstrations in response to ongoing violence in the Gaza strip.  Embassy advises all American citizens residing in or visiting Bangladesh to avoid the following areas on Friday, January 9, 2009 after Jumma prayer: Baitul Mukaram Nation Mosque, Rahim Metal Mosque, Tejgaon Industrial Area, Iraqi Mosque, Mohakhali (in front of the BRAC center) and Khilbarirtek Mosque (behind the Japanese School).

As even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly and unexpectedly escalate into violence, Americans citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if at all possible and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstration. We urge all individuals to carry their mobile phones with them at all times.

If demonstrations escalate, please monitor the local media for updates. English language local news is available on the following channels at the following times:

Bangla Vision – 2105
BTV – 2200
BTV – 2330 (also broadcasts by all local satellite stations: ATN, Channel I, NTV, RTV, Bangla Vision, and Boishaki)
