Security Notice, November 16, 2006

The "Siege" program of the Awami League and 14-Party Alliances has been withdrawn.  As of date, it is scheduled to begin again on Monday, November 20, 2006 if the Awami League’s demands are not met.  The security environment in Dhaka is calm, road blockades have been removed, intra/inter city road and rail transportation systems are fully functional.

The Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and Awami League (AL) will organize separate rallies and meetings throughout the country. In Dhaka, areas of large public gatherings will be the Muktangan, Naya Paltan, Paltan Maidan and Bangabandhu Avenue.  Although there is no violence right now , the situation remains fluid and the potential for violence can flare up at any moment.

We recommend that American citizens avoid the Muktangan, Naya Paltan, Paltan Maidan and Bangabandhu Avenue for the remainder of the day today. Travel outside the diplomatic enclave is permitted except to the previously mentioned areas.

We also recommend that American citizens monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.
