GENERAL DEMONSTRATIONS

Police sources confirmed that the following groups have planned demonstrations near downtown Dhaka on Sunday, October 15, 2006.

The Sramik Karmachari Oikyo Parishad (SKOP) will enforce a 24-hour country-wide strike today. SKOP has made preparations to block the highways, railways and waterways for four hours today from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The National Garment Workers’ Federation, an alliance of 11 garments workers’ associations, declared a country-wide strike today.

Police also confirmed expectations of heavy traffic as a result of these demonstrations: there could be civil unrest all over the city during the entire day especially in Uttara, Mirpur, Rampura, Tezgaon, Tongi, Mohakhali, Paltan intersection and Muktangan area.

We recommend that American citizens avoid these areas during these specified times.

We also recommend that American citizens monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.
