The police have confirmed that the Awami League and opposition will hold a siege and/or sit-in at the Election Commission Secretariat tomorrow from 11:00 to 13:00. Demonstrators are likely to come in small processions/groups from different parts of the city and gather at the Election Commission Area.
The government yesterday imposed a ban on any kind of gathering, procession, demonstration or siege around the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat from 01:00 until 20:00 on September 6, 2006.
The Police stated the ban will be effective around the EC Secretariat with the following city streets considered as the area where demonstrators will be stopped.
In the north, the street from Agargaon-Rokeya Sarani intersection to Shishu Mela-Mirpur Road intersection.
In the south, from Dhanmondi Road 27-Mirpur Road intersection to Dhanmondi Government Boys High School and from the school to Indira Road via T&T field.
In the east, from Indira Road intersection to Agargaon-Rokeya Sarani intersection via Islamia Eye Hospital.
In the west, from Shishu Mela-Mirpur Road intersection to Old Mohammadpur Police Station, and from Asad Avenue to the eastern end of Dhanmondi Road 27.
The police are expecting clashes with demonstators during the processions to the EC, to include difficulty traveling by vehicle in the areas mentioned above.
The Embassy advises all American Citizens to avoid above areas during the time specified above.
We also recommend that American Citizens monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.
