Security Notice

Security Notice, September 20, 2007

The police have stated that several Islamic groups have planned demonstrations throughout Dhaka on Friday, September 21, 2007.  The demonstrations will occur after Friday Prayer (at 1430 hours) in protest of a cartoon published in the Daily Prothom Alo. 

The Embassy advises all American Citizens to avoid the following areas of Dhaka during these planned protests:

    • Baitul Mukarram Mosque, Topkhana Road, Downtown 

    • Rahim Metal Mosque, Tejgaon Industrial area

    • Prothom Alo Office, Karwan Bazar (near the Sonargaon Hotel)

    • Lalbagh Mosque, Old Town

General Security Guidance:  All Americans are reminded to exercise vigilance when traveling in Dhaka as demonstrations can occur with little warning.  Crowds should be avoided.  Please be alert and aware at all times and continue to vary routes and schedules.  Finally, all individuals are reminded to carry their mobile phones with them at all times. 

General guidance for all emergencies is “GET IN, STAY IN, and TUNE IN”

BTV – 2200
BTV – 2330 (also broadcasts by all local satellite stations:  ATN, Channel I, NTV, RTV, Bangla Vision, and Boishaki)
