The American Center oversees “American Corner” mini-libraries in Chittagong, Sylhet and Jessore.  American Corner Sylhet opened in January 2004 at Sylhet International University. The American Corner provides basic reference materials on the United States, Internet terminals, video viewing facilities, and English-language tapes, as well as a growing section of guidebooks for students wanting to study at American universities.

American Corners are information resource and outreach centers of the American Center of the U.S. Embassy. Books, journals, magazines, video and CD-ROMs with a focus on various aspects of the United States are available for anybody who visits. The American Corner at Sylhet International University- the second in Bangladesh- was inaugurated on January 15, 2004. The people of Sylhet are encouraged to visit the American Corner and sign up for its services.

Ambassador Moriarty Highlights Community-Based Development Initiatives in Three-Day Visit to Sylhet

Ambassador James F. Moriarty traveled to Sylhet, Sreemongal and Habiganj August 3-5 to review development activities in the region. During visits to various U.S. Government-funded projects, the Ambassador reaffirmed America’s long-term commitment to the development of Bangladesh.  Highlights of his visit included the inauguration of a U.S. Government-supported health clinic and a dialog on conservation and co-management for the Lawachara National Park, part of a $12.7 million forest and wetland protection program funded by the U.S. Government. More

On August 4, Ambassador Moriarty addressed a U.S. Government-sponsored dialog on conservation and co-management for the Lawachara National Park in Srimangal. Ambassador Moriarty Announces New U.S. Government-Sponsored $13.5 Million Health

Initiative “MAMONI” (Ma)Ambassador James F. Moriarty announced today (August 4, 2009) a new U.S. Government-sponsored $13.5 million health initiative called “MAMONI” (Ma) that will promote maternal and child health care in Sylhet.  The project aims to address the high death rates among women and infants in Sylhet through improved outreach by field workers, increased education for safe pregnancy and delivery, and improved family planning and child spacing.
