Warden Message December 4, 2005

Police sources confirmed the following demonstrations are planned for today, December 4, 2005:

Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association will stage a protest around the Supreme Court starting today at 1100 hours in protest of the government's failure to arrest the leaders of recent bomb attacks.Bangladesh Communist Party will stage a protest and mourning procession around the area of Muktangan today at 1600 hours in protest of increased attacks of Islamic militants.

Police sources further informed that The 14 Party Opposition Alliance has called for an 8 hours (6 am to 2 pm) Hartal in the greater Sylhet district, today, in protest of Friday’s grenade attack on the City Mayor.

The pattern of attacks at court-related facilities appears to be continuing. Americans resident in Bangladesh who have business at any courthouse may wish to exercise extra caution. Remember to report any suspicious activity to the police.

We wish to remind American Citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent, and accordingly American Citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, if possible and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of demonstrations.

We also encourage all Americans living in Bangladesh or traveling through the area to register at www.travel.state.gov or by calling the Embassy at 885-5500.
