Police have informed the U.S. Embassy that additional security measures will be in place throughout the Diplomatic Enclave for this evening, New Year’s Eve. Historically, the government has not allowed large unauthorized gatherings on New Year’s Eve due to past incidents of violence. The government will also be enforcing alcohol restrictions. In light of this, please note the following information:
Diplomatic Enclave Security
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police will close all roads into the Diplomatic Enclave at 2000 hrs with the following exceptions:
· Kokoli Crossing (Banani Bridge)
· Madani Avenue (intersection between Chancery and GSO)
Police check points throughout the Diplomatic Enclave will be manned by RAB, APBN, and DMP personnel and an increase in plain clothes assets and mobile patrols will be in place. Should you be stopped, we advise you to cooperate with the police.
Alcohol Restrictions
Alcohol consumption is prohibited outside of specifically authorized parties. These parties include the Westin, Radisson and Regency hotels as well as parties at diplomatic clubs. Police have specifically informed post that consumption of alcohol at restaurants without liquor licenses is prohibited, even if it has been brought from home. We have been informed to expect police raids on restaurants within the Diplomatic Enclave on New Year’s Eve. You are advised to limit your alcohol consumption to authorized venues only and refrain from carrying liquor on the streets.
Please remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police, and avoid crowds and unruly gatherings throughout the night.
