Police sources have confirmed the following public demonstrations are planned for today, January 23, 2006:
The Bangladesh Teachers Employee’s Association will stage a protest around the Central Shaheed Minar followed by a demonstration in front of the Prime Minister Secretariat at 1100 hours in support of their various demands.
The 14 party opposition alliance, led by the Awami League, will stage a grand public rally today at the Paltan Maidan. The alliance is demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
We recommend that American citizens avoid the following areas of the Dhaka City during these planned demonstrations:
Muktangan, Purana Paltan, Gulistan, GPO, Bangabandhu Avenue, National Press Club, Paltan Maidan, National Stadium, Baitul Mukarram Mosque, Central Shaheed Minar.
We wish to remind American Citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent. American Citizens are urged to avoid these areas if possible, and to exercise caution whenever they are in the vicinity of demonstrations. We advise all Americans to avoid large public gatherings, especially if an incident has just occurred.
