Security Notice

June 8, 2006

On June 11, 2006, the Awami League and its 14 party opposition alliance plan to disrupt transportation in and out of Dhaka as a method of protest related to concerns stemming from election disputes. Protest organizers have dubbed it a "siege" and hope to immobilize the city to show that the ruling BNP government has lost the support of the population.

Between 09:00-15:00 the Awami League and its coalition partners plan to place road barricades along nine strategic entry/exit routes to Dhaka. The entry/exit routes are located at: Kanchpur, Demra, Sayedabad, Gulistan, Tongi (Abdullahpur), Gabtali, Sadarghat River Port, Jatrabari, Kamlapur Railway Station.

The Awami League and its coalition partners will also attempt to place road barricades in the following areas within Dhaka to stop transportation inside the city limits: Motijheel (Shapla Square), Duel Square, Bangabandhu Avenue, Purana Paltan, GPO Square, Nawabpur, Shahbag, New Market, Palashi, Farm Gate, Mirpur, Russell Square, Uttara, Rampura, Malibagh, Moghbazar and Banglamotor.

In past instances there has often been violence between the demonstrators and the police. The Embassy strongly advises all American citizens to limit their travel in the Dhaka area as much as possible on June 11, 2006, and to avoid any areas where crowds are gathering.

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka can be reached at (880-2) 885-5500 during regular hours and for after-hours emergencies. Our website address is dhaka.usembassy.gov.
